SRRMC Archaeology Program
The archaeology program takes a broad range and multi-disciplinary approach to archaeological research and management.

In addition to archaeological sites, we recognize a full range of cultural heritage sites important to the Stó:lō community, including Transformation Sites, various Place Names and Spirited Places as defined in the Stó:lō Heritage Policy.

Through our program we actively help regulate archaeological work in the Stó:lō Territory. At the same time, we actively participate in all aspects of archaeology from research to resource management, collections curation to repatriation, interpretation to public involvement and cross-cultural awareness – both on reserve and off.

Our staff - trained, equipped and with access to our in-house GIS system, databases and technicians - regularly conduct development-related assessments within Stó:lō Territory. In the last four years we have conducted over forty-five archaeological assessments, identifying and developing management plans for the respectful treatment of numerous cultural sites in the process.

Field Schools

The SRRMC is actively involved in various ways with research focused on the Stó:lō. We regularly host archaeological field schools from SFU and the UBC, as well as the ethnohistory field schools from UVIC and USASK, and anthropology field schools from UBC – working in close collaboration with local Stó:lo communities. We work collaboratively with community members and Elders on wide range of projects.

The goal of our research is to foster a better understanding of Stó:lō culture and heritage by developing and sharing a set of information that is useful to the broader Stó:lō community.  Reports from Field School students can be accessed in the SRRMC archives.
